This last weekend my four year old son started complaining that his left ear was hurting while we were at the playground. By the time we were on the way home his complaints were escalating to the point of hysteria and he was running a fever. We drove immediately to the office to take a look at it. I wasn’t able to even get the scope in there to take a look because it hurt him so much. He told me that it was all better, and ran out of the exam room and grabbed an icepack to put on his ear. We drove back home and he started getting clingy wanting to be held even if I was just walking to the kitchen. I adjusted him and he fell straight to sleep and slept through the night. When he woke up in the morning his ear pain was gone.
The reason I mention this personal story in my blog is that ear infections, aka otitis media, are the most common condition that affect babies and young children, which makes up 35% of all pediatric visits. Two thirds of children will have will have at least one ear infection by the age of 3.
So why does balancing the nervous system work so well in allowing your child’s body to heal their own nervous system? Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body is innervated by the nervous system. In the case, cranial nerve VIII the Vestibulocochlear nerve which goes from the brain stem to the ear originating near C1, and the sympathetic caroticotympanic nerves which supply the blood vessels of the ear drum via the superior cervical ganglion originating from T1-T2. I realize that most people don’t want to know that much detail, but that was for those who do.
Did I adjust away my son’s ear pain? The answer is no, what I did by adjusting him was balance his nervous system so that his body could work on his ear infection from the inside out. That’s the real power of chiropractic.
