Infants who are exclusively breastfed for 6 months have fewer and less severe infections their first year of life, according to a study in the Archives of Disease in Childhood.
The study of 900 children who were breast fed for at least 6mo. had fewer infections in their first year of life, and had fewer doctor visits for acute otitis media, acute respiratory infection, and thrush. There were also less hospital admissions for infections.
This just goes to show the importance of breastfeeding for a child. Many advocates support breastfeeding for 1 year before introducing allergen containing foods. The less food in the first year the better!.
